Facial Construction: Building Believable Fantasy Heads

Every strong character starts with structure, not detail. In this lesson, you'll learn how to build a fantasy character's head and face from basic construction shapes — using Vaelis Thorshik, a dark elf ranger of Menzoberranzan, as the working example.

What You'll Learn

  • How to block in the cranial mass and jaw before placing any features

  • Where to place eyes, nose, and mouth using proportion guidelines

  • How ear placement and head angle change with a 3/4 or profile view

  • How fantasy features — elongated ears, sharper bone structure — build on the same fundamentals as a realistic head

Step-by-Step Breakdown

Basic Shape

"Start by thinking of the head as a large three-dimensional mass rather than a collection of facial features. Here, the foundation is built from a soft, squared shape, with the sides widening slightly around the cheekbone area."

Proportion Guidelines

"Guide lines can be added across the head to establish the approximate positions of the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth. These lines are temporary. They're simply there to help keep the facial features balanced as the drawing develops."

Feature Placement

"Once the eyes are established, light guide lines can be drawn downward toward the jaw. These help visualize the approximate width of the mouth and keep the features aligned with one another. The nose, cheekbones, and jaw can also be simplified into basic planes and shapes."

Fantasy Refinement

"Once the larger structure feels believable, the smaller details become much easier to place. This is a good point to begin refining the eyes, nose, mouth, hair, and other facial features. Don't be afraid to erase and redraw. Construction lines aren't mistakes. They're part of the process."

Meet Vaelis Thorshik

Vaelis Thorshik was born in Menzoberranzan, deep within the Underdark beneath Faerûn.

From an early age, she was trained as a scout and tracker, learning to survive through patience, silence, and precision. Her assignments often involved tracking escaped prisoners, rival agents, or creatures moving too close to drow territory. Failure was rarely forgiven.

During a raid on the surface, Vaelis was ordered to execute a wounded traveler. The prisoner was barely capable of defending themselves. For reasons even Vaelis may not completely understand, she hesitated. And then she let the traveler escape.

Within the society she came from, mercy was not seen as virtue. It was weakness. Worse than that, it was disobedience. Vaelis was branded a traitor and forced to flee the Underdark before those loyal to her former house could hunt her down.

The surface world offered little comfort. Most settlements distrusted her immediately, forcing Vaelis to survive along the forests, abandoned roads, and forgotten ruins of Faerûn. Over time, she became a tracker, bounty hunter, guide, and reluctant protector. The discipline of the Underdark never completely left her. But exile gave her something she had never possessed before. Independence.

Some travelers speak of a pale figure watching silently from the tree line. Others tell stories of poisoned arrows striking bandits before anyone hears the bowstring. And beneath the surface, among those who still remember her name, Vaelis Thorshik remains a warning.

Not because she failed. But because she escaped.

Ravenquill Bestiary #001 — CR 4

Vaelis is built as a CR 4 encounter centered around stealth, mobility, poison, and battlefield positioning. Rather than overpowering adventurers through brute strength, she is designed to outmaneuver them. Her signature ability, Shadow Step, lets her move between areas of shadow while surrounded by dim light or darkness, repositioning before she attacks — so she constantly changes angles during combat instead of holding one location.

Her weapons are also coated with poison, making even a successful hit dangerous beyond the initial damage. She's built to feel less like a traditional frontline enemy and more like someone hunting the party from the edges of the battlefield.
